Camping crisis in MV: Price increases and cancellations shock guests!

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, tempers are running high among campsite operators: Jens Dröge, head of the “Ecktannen” campsite in Waren, is anything but happy after the latest developments. With an impressive 60 cancellations and departures within a short period of time, his displeasure is loud that the final reports on the current camping price situation cannot be correct. [Nordkurier]. However, Dröge cannot confirm this because the prices at his place have remained constant for three years.

However, the problems seem to be increasing. Weather reports that have caused panic among campers in the past are reflected directly in the cash register. An unfavorable weather report on the Men's Day weekend led to a hefty loss in sales of around 3,000 euros. Dröge calls the phenomenon “panic weather reports,” which he blames for declining sales. The shortage of personnel, especially in shift work, also poses major challenges for the industry.

Prices and regional differences

As the ADAC reports in an analysis, the average price for an overnight stay camping in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will remain at around 43 euros in 2025. This makes MV the most expensive federal state for camping in Germany, although it remains both below the European average of 52 euros and significantly cheaper than leader Croatia at 68 euros per night. The regional differences in MV cannot be ignored:

  • Rügen: 41 Euro
  • Mecklenburgische Seenplatte: 40 Euro
  • Ostseeküste: Anstieg von 47 auf 52 Euro
  • Usedom: Anstieg von 44 auf 50 Euro
  • Fischland-Darß-Zingst: Anstieg von 43 auf 44 Euro
  • Abseits touristischer Hotspots: 34 Euro

For the campsite operator Manja Zachmann, who runs the “Am Grünen Baum” campsite in Neustrelitz, the situation looks different. She wants to make a name for herself first and therefore cannot raise prices. However, price increases are unavoidable for many operators, especially to cover the increased costs of renovations. Dröge is also considering raising prices to cover the renovation costs, which have now increased by half.

The future of camping

The developments raise the question: How will the camping industry in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania develop further? A comparison with other European camping countries shows that Germany is considered the cheapest camping country in Europe at 38 euros per night. Nevertheless: The price increase of five percent nationwide compared to the previous year makes it clear that the industry is under pressure. At the same time, there is a clear hierarchy of camping prices in Europe:

country Average price
Croatia 68 euros
Italy 66 euros
Switzerland 62 euros
Slovenia 62 euros
Spain 60 euros

The need to react flexibly to the price and demand situation is becoming increasingly important. The popularity and condition of the campsites naturally also influence the prices. If you reserve early, you can save money and secure the best seats. This strategy could be worth its weight in gold for many campers in the future.

The situation is therefore complex as the operators continue to fight for the favor of campers - not only in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but throughout Germany.
