Dresden Ice Lions start strong: A win against Bremerhaven!

An exciting ice hockey game was scheduled for October 26, 2025: The Dresden Ice Lions met the Fischtown Pinguins from Bremerhaven. Niklas Sundblad, the Ice Lions' coach, emphasized the importance of a quick and controlled start. And the team immediately implemented these guidelines: After just 85 seconds, Dane Fox scored the first goal of the game, which was his fifth goal of the season, and gave Dresden an early lead. Tomas Andres did the preparatory work for this in the second minute. But Bremerhaven was not discouraged for long and promptly put Dresden under pressure.

Defensively, the Ice Lions had their hands full in the first few minutes. Goalie Jussi Olkinuora proved to be a reliable support and saved several dangerous shots on his goal. Things got particularly exciting in the 8th minute when Ludwig Byström almost scored an own goal with a dangerous shot. As the first third progressed, Bennet Roßmy missed a good chance in the 13th minute, and Ross Mauermann was unable to convert a pass from Nicholas Jensen in the very last second of the third.

A dramatic middle third

Things should get even more exciting in the second third. C.J. Suess had a lightning start in mind and could have extended the lead for the Ice Lions. But in the 31st minute it was Nicolas Krämmer who equalized for Bremerhaven. However, the Eislöwen reacted immediately and took the lead again in the 35th minute through Austin Ortega.

In the final section, the Eislöwen found their way back into their game. Bremerhaven had difficulties against Dresden's disciplined defense, which made the game more difficult for the Pinguins. Emil Johansson was unlucky in the 47th minute and received a penalty for tripping. Alexander Friesen made optimal use of this power play and equalized just 8 seconds later. And as if that wasn't enough, Andy Miele scored the next goal for the Penguins just 54 seconds later.

An exciting finale

In the 55th minute, Andrew LeBlanc had a chance to equalize, but was stopped by goalie Leon Hungerecker. In the 60th minute, the last goal of the game came from Matthew Abts, who increased the score to 4-2 for Bremerhaven. This made the win for the Penguins perfect.

The situation in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) is particularly exciting at the moment. Ice hockey is very popular in Germany: According to Statista, 4.9 million Germans have a high interest in ice hockey, and the number of members of the German Ice Hockey Association rose to around 25,900 in 2024. The point gap in the table is narrow and the number of spectators has increased significantly compared to last season, now averaging almost 7,800 per game - a clear upward trend!

Last weekend's event bordered on a nostalgia that will stay with fans for a long time. How will the Ice Lions fare the next time they take to the ice? We are excited and will continue to report!
