Tragic plane crash in India: 32 victims identified!

After a tragic plane crash in western India that took place near Ahmedabad airport on June 12, 2025, the first remains are now being handed over to the victims' relatives. According to the North Sea newspaper So far, 32 victims have been identified through DNA comparisons, 14 of which have already been handed over to their families. However, the number of victims could be higher due to the ongoing identification process.

According to reports, at least 270 people died in this catastrophic event, both on the plane and on the ground. The Air India Boeing 787-8 was on its way to London and crashed into a residential area shortly after take-off, where it exploded in a fireball. Of the 241 people on board, 240 were reported dead, while one British passenger managed to survive.

State measures to identify victims

The Gujarat government has set up a special DNA testing facility at B. J. Medical College in Ahmedabad in response to the tragedy. This was necessary to speed up the identification of the victims. Family members, especially parents and children of passengers, are requested to submit their samples at the site, such as News on Air reported. The DNA analyzes, which normally take up to three months, are to be carried out within just 72 hours using a new procedure.

The survivors and injured are receiving the best possible treatment at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad. Around 50 injured people were admitted there and two hotline numbers were set up so that relatives can obtain information about their relatives.

A look at the number of victims

The exact number of fatalities is still unclear as many body parts could not be identified at the crash site and numerous people are missing. Of the passengers on board the Air India plane, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were British, 7 were Portuguese and 1 was Canadian. Horrible reports about the ongoing rescue work and the difficult identification of the deceased are currently dominating the news, while the police and fire brigade on site continue to be extremely active.

The exact cause of the accident still remains uncertain. Initial data shows that shortly after takeoff and reaching an altitude of 625 feet, the plane suddenly descended, falling at a rate of 475 feet per minute, as Bluewin reported. The route, which had already departed from Ahmedabad at 1:38 p.m. local time, was originally scheduled to land in London at 6:25 p.m.

Amid this tragedy, support from the community and authorities is essential. The events have affected many people and the wounds will take time to heal.
