New high-speed trains: Daily connection between Hamburg and Basel!
From December 14, 2025, the train network between Hamburg and Basel will have an attractive connection. The new high-speed trains, called “Giruno”, offer two trains daily in each direction. According to reports from t-online.de The trains are operated in cooperation between Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).
The Giruno trains, which come from the Swiss manufacturer Stadler, can accommodate 405 passengers. They are equipped with sockets and ensure step-free entry, which makes the journey particularly comfortable. The journey time between the two cities is approximately six hours and 45 minutes, and trains will depart at two fixed times: at 8:29 a.m. and 4:29 p.m. from Hamburg-Altona and at 6:46 a.m. and 2:46 p.m. from Basel.

A special highlight will be the christening of one of the new trains, which will be christened “Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg” on December 14th in Hamburg’s Altona train station. This ceremony is not only a start for the new connections, but also a festive occasion that will certainly attract many visitors.
Well connected to Europe
With this new connection, Hamburg is expanding its international travel offerings. Direct connections to Copenhagen, Stockholm and various destinations in the Alpine region are currently available. Travelers can reach Copenhagen in around five hours, while the journey to Innsbruck or Zurich with the Austrian Federal Railways Nightjet is also very attractive. A trip to Vienna takes around nine hours.
There will be a total of 30 daily trips between Hamburg and Basel, but the current offer will remain unchanged. The new Giruno trains set standards for modern travel in Europe, with the focus on comfort and speed.
