Eppendorf Market Square: Major renovation begins today for better mobility!
Today, July 7, 2025, the long-awaited renovation of the Eppendorf market square begins NDR reports. The renovation will take place in several phases and is expected to take one and a half years. The main aim of this measure is to improve the traffic situation around the market square and to give pedestrians and cyclists more space.
The bus stops on Martinistrasse, Eppendorfer Marktplatz, Ludolfstrasse and Heinickestrasse will be extended. To ensure that traffic does not come to a standstill, at least one lane in each direction will be maintained on the main roads. In July, temporary lanes will first be set up and traffic islands will be removed, which will inevitably lead to closures and diversions.
The challenges at the Eppendorf market square
The Eppendorf market square is known for its confusing and often chaotic traffic. How lsbg.hamburg.de explains, there is often not enough space for pedestrians and cyclists and the infrastructure for local public transport does not meet today's requirements. The many conflicts between the different modes of transport have made the need for restructuring all the more clear.
The planning for the redesign of the marketplace began in 2017 and went through several phases. A public participation process made it possible to capture local needs and interests. Thanks to passerby surveys and discussion groups, valuable information was collected that was incorporated into the planning. This participation phase was completed in May 2018, and the plans were continuously developed in order to meet new requirements, for example as part of the cycling decision.
Residents can look forward to an improved quality of stay. Further challenges such as avoiding cycle lanes in the middle are part of the considerations. The people of Eppendorf have reason to hope for a livelier and safer market square that will appeal to both pedestrians and cyclists and thus increase the attractiveness of the area.
Overall, this project will be an important step towards a modern transport infrastructure in the Eppendorf district that not only takes current needs into account, but also has the future in mind.
