Together against dementia: Hamburg's big action days are starting soon!

On September 21, 2025, it's that time again: World Alzheimer's Day is just around the corner and brings the Dementia Action Days 2025, which have the motto "Dementia - being and staying human". The city of Hamburg, together with the Hamburg social authority, the Hamburg Association for Health Promotion e.V. and many other local actors, invites you to this important event, which aims to increase awareness of dementia and promote social participation of those affected. In total, around 34,000 people with dementia live in Hamburg, many of whom are cared for by relatives. During this time, a diverse program will be used to draw attention to the needs of these people, while at the same time offering creative and connecting activities.

The action days officially begin on September 20th with a special Klangzeit concert in the Elbphilharmonie, which will be opened by Social Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer. From September 19th to 28th, 2025, numerous events will take place in all Hamburg districts that will provide both information about the disease and support offers for those affected and their relatives. The initiators emphasize that people with dementia continue to be part of society and that their courage to live and their dignity should be respected at all times.

Diverse program for all generations

The program includes a wide range of activities. These include cross-generational singing, Klangzeit concerts by the Ensemble Klang and the inclusive dance event “Let’s Dance”. The Altona Museum also opens its doors with the exhibition “SprachOper Unforgettable Audible” as well as dementia-sensitive tours. A special highlight will be the Wandsbek Dementia Action Day, which will take place on September 21st in the Volksdorf Museum Village. Here, visitors can take part in a wide range of discussions and offers without registering, including lectures on forgetfulness and conversations with doctors.

Another exciting offer is the Hamburg care associations' pension mobile, which will be present at various locations. Anyone interested can obtain information at the Wandsbek market on September 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. before continuing on to the Volksdorf museum village in the afternoon. For those who would like to find out more information, consultations and information stands are also offered in various districts.

Attention to the needs of those affected

The focus of the event addresses various aspects of dementia, from information on therapeutic offers to cultural contributions that promote togetherness. This also includes numerous discussions and participation activities aimed at relatives and those affected. A special point of reference is the Living with Dementia Department, which acts as a central contact point for improving the living situation of people with dementia. This central role was also demonstrated by the Migration and Dementia Network, which, in collaboration with the St. Pauli neighborhood home, organized a relaxed meeting with the general practitioner Dr. Ayfer Karataş, which provides information about forgetfulness.

The final event of the action days on September 28th in the St. Pauli Theater is titled “Courage of Life Despite Dementia” with the renowned Dr. Sarah Straub, promises to be an appropriate end to the varied days. The aim of this initiative is clear: to raise awareness of the challenges and needs of people with dementia and to provide them and their families with a sense of community and support.

The action days in Hamburg are not only an important opportunity to gain valuable information, but also a sign of solidarity and respect for the many people who live with dementia. You can find more information about the events and offers at Evening paper and HAG Health.
