Hamburg gets a mobile ice hockey rink: Eidelstedt becomes an ice center!

Something is happening in the area of ice sports in Hamburg: a mobile ice hockey rink will be put into operation in the Eidelstedt sports park from mid-November 2025. This news comes just in time after the Stellingen ice rink had to be closed due to a dilapidated roof structure and the associated risk of collapse. Currently the only remaining ice hockey rink in the city is the Eisland Farmsen, which has been very overcrowded in recent weeks, reports NDR.

Irmelin Svensson, chairwoman of the Hamburg Ice and Roller Sports Association (HERV), is enthusiastic about the new mobile ice surface, which offers ice sports clubs in Hamburg the opportunity to continue to be active and hold competitions and training. However, public ice skating will not be possible on the new rink, which could be a bit of a disappointment, especially for families and recreational ice skaters.

Transitional solutions and political decisions

The closure of the Stellingen ice rink also caused political waves. The SPD and the Greens have submitted a motion to the Hamburg parliament that is intended to secure the future of the ice rink. Renovating the 30-year-old roof does not make sense, which is why a new ice rink is being planned. They want to find a solution for reopening by autumn 2026, but the perspective is long-term: the ice rink is unlikely to be renovated, and the mobile ice hockey surface is being considered as a temporary solution for users, as is the case Eimsbüttel News report.

The authorities have planned to provide up to 125,000 euros from the Hamburg 2030 renovation fund to support the mobile ice rink. This is intended to create the conditions to ensure smooth operation. In addition to the activities in Eidelstedt, an extension of the ice times in the Farmsen ice country is also advocated, which could give the ice sports community a further buffer.

Ice hockey tradition in Hamburg

Ice hockey has a long tradition in Hamburg. The city was already a stronghold of ice sports in Germany between 1884 and 1905. The German Ice Skating Association was founded in Hamburg in 1888, and many Hamburg clubs were instrumental in organizing the first German championships in speed skating and figure skating, such as the Wikipedia holds on. The development of ice hockey has also changed significantly in the Hanseatic city over the decades - a long history that is still crucial for the sports landscape today.

The introduction of the mobile ice rink in Eidelstedt is not only a necessary interim solution, but also a sign of the stability and further development of ice sports in Hamburg. It remains to be hoped that the ice rink in Stellingen will soon receive a new perspective in order to offer Hamburg's ice athletes a permanent place again.
