Hamburg is fighting against sidewalk parking: There must be space for pedestrians!
What's going on in Hamburg? A topic that is currently occupying people's minds: parking on sidewalks. In the Hanseatic city, this practice is viewed increasingly critically, especially by the German Environmental Aid (DUH). According to a report by n-tv Drivers are given too much space on sidewalks, which causes significant problems for people with mobility limitations.
The DUH calls for clear measures and consistent punishment for those parked on sidewalks. People who rely on walkers, wheelchairs or strollers are particularly affected. They should have enough space in the city to be able to move around safely. Currently, in Hamburg, a remaining sidewalk width of at least 2.20 meters must remain in order to tolerate sidewalk parking. This only falls slightly short of the recommended standard width of 2.50 meters.
Nationwide trend
However, the problem of sidewalk parking is not just limited to Hamburg. Nationwide, out of 105 cities surveyed, only 33 stated that they generally did not tolerate sidewalk parking. This shows extensive ignoring of the technical recommendation to keep the sidewalks at least 2.50 meters wide. This disregard is alarming because it particularly endangers the mobility of people who need help.
The road traffic regulations only allow parking on sidewalks under certain conditions set out by traffic signs or markings. Therefore, the DUH not only calls for clarification, but also for active intervention by the responsible authorities to ensure the safety of all road users.
What's going on in the city
Given the important debate about sidewalk parking in Hamburg, we can only hope that those responsible develop a good sense of what citizens really need. Because everyone’s mobility should always come first.
