Major fire in Bergen: Fire brigade fights against destructive flames!

On the night of Wednesday, January 21, 2026, there was a major fire in Bergen that broke out in the hall of a metal construction company. Witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames flaring up shortly after midnight. The fire brigade arrived quickly on site and was able to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings. Despite the freezing temperatures, which made extinguishing work difficult, the emergency services managed to put out the fire. The fire brigade received support from the company owner, who used road salt and oil binding agents. According to the police, the damage is around 150,000 euros, which doesn't exactly make the situation rosy. An exact cause of the fire is still unclear.

But it wasn't just in Bergen that there were recent fire brigade operations. On October 2, 2025, the Sassnitz water police inspection and the fire department reported a fire on a permanently moored sailing yacht at the jetty of the Baabe sailing club. According to initial information, the owner reported that there were no people on board, which fortunately prevented anything worse from happening. The first extinguishing attack was successful, but another fire broke out, which the fire department quickly brought under control. However, the damage to the stern area and the hull was significant. The cause of the fire is currently being examined by a fire investigator on the following day, although a technical defect is suspected, as news.de reports.

New life for Sassnitz harbor property

In Sassnitz, the plans for the last large free plot of land in the city harbor are on the agenda. The 2.8 hectare area, which previously served as a railway track and as a location for the People's Navy, is to be given a new purpose. The city of Sassnitz is working hand in hand with external planners on a development plan that could redesign the area. A breath of fresh air could blow here, bringing the city new perspectives that are urgently needed.

FRS White Fleet under a new name

Another issue affecting Sassnitz is the renaming of the White Fleet. From now on, this part of the FRS group will operate under the new name FRS Weiße Flotte, which means a merger of several shipping company brands under a single name. However, everything will remain the same for passengers and business partners - no changes to ongoing operations are planned. This is perceived as a further step to clarify the membership of the FRS group, as on [ostsee-zeitung.de].

There is also news in the court landscape. A Somali man from Ribnitz was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison for an incident in which he attacked his ex-girlfriend and her new partner with a pair of scissors. The court did not see any planned murder attempt, but the crime was not without consequences for those involved. In addition, a teacher in Stralsund, Lisa Dreist, has renounced civil servant status. She has said goodbye to the state school system and is happy with her decision, even if it means she has to forego the financial benefits of becoming a civil servant.
