Winter chaos in MV: 12 accidents due to slippery conditions and snow!

On the afternoon of January 2, 2026 and into the night, there were a series of weather-related traffic accidents in northern Germany that kept the police on their toes. The reports from the Neubrandenburg police headquarters show that the winter road conditions caused major problems, especially in the Vorpommern-Rügen district.

So reported news.de that in this district alone, six out of a total of twelve traffic accidents are caused by slippery roads and heavy snowfall. These unfortunate incidents caused a total damage of over EUR 31,000 and slightly injured one person.

Recklessness in winter conditions

The police reported several actions in which drivers did not adapt to the prevailing weather conditions. Germans and even a Ukrainian, aged between 19 and 59, were involved in numerous accidents. One of the particularly sensitive accidents was an incident at the L213 roundabout near Kramerhof, where a 35-year-old car driver had an accident in the evening and sustained minor injuries.

Further accidents occurred between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. in various places such as Bergen auf Rügen and Grimmen. Fortunately, those involved remained uninjured and the damage amounted to around EUR 16,500.

There was even an alcohol-related incident that night when a 58-year-old man drove into a roundabout in Zempin and was caught with a blood alcohol level of 1.31. Here, too, there was only material damage, while he accepted significantly higher risks.

A look at the accident statistics

However, the situation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is not new. Already on November 24, 2025, there were a significant number of slippery accidents caused by similar weather conditions. Around 60 accidents with two seriously injured people were counted on that day alone, which underlines the ongoing problem of winter driving conditions. Also the statistics of the Federal Statistical Office shows that such accidents have been increasing in recent years.

In view of the current weather conditions, the police are urgently looking for a rethink among road users. She calls on people to reduce their speed and drive more carefully so as not to endanger themselves and others. Especially in these wintry conditions, unwanted surprises can quickly arise.

Unfortunately, these incidents and the associated police advice confirm that many drivers have not adequately prepared for winter road conditions. Whether in the form of incorrect or inadequate tires, the problem often lies in the behavior of drivers who underestimate the dangers of slippery roads. It remains to be hoped that these events serve as a warning example.
