Despite this sobering record, Wirtz was still able to provide two assists in a Champions League game against Frankfurt, which shows that the talent is there, but in the Premier League the knot just won't break.
A team under pressure
The situation at Liverpool is not rosy: the last similar series of defeats was reminiscent of the 2020/21 season. In the second half of the game against Brentford, captain Virgil van Dijk also caused a penalty, which contributed significantly to the team's capitulation. After the game, Van Dijk made it clear that the responsibility for the current failures does not lie solely with Wirtz or other individual players, but is a collective matter. The team has a collective responsibility to break this negative series.
However, Wirtz cannot rest on his laurels for the upcoming encounters. There are important games on the program in the next few weeks: Crystal Palace is waiting for the Reds in the League Cup, they are against Aston Villa in the Premier League and they have to compete with Real Madrid in the Champions League. These games are crucial to proving Wirtz's value in the league, as Bild also notes.
The fans are hoping for improvement, but the ridicule from the Brentford supporters will certainly stay in Wirtz's head for a long time. Positive behavior and belief in one's own abilities are now required so that the talented kicker can finally regain connection to the world class.
