On Tuesday evening, November 18, 2025, a tradition came to life in the citizens' hall of the town hall in Greifswald that honors the sporting and voluntary commitment in the university and Hanseatic city. The 34th Sports Day of Honor, organized by the city of Greifswald and the city sports association, brought together many committed citizens to celebrate the achievements of athletes and volunteers in clubs. Loud NDR A total of 15 awards were presented, including certificates of honor and badges of honor, which were presented to outstanding personalities.
What is particularly noteworthy is that this year nine people were awarded a certificate of honor for their special services. They have all made a valuable contribution to the development of sport in Greifswald through their sporting achievements and their voluntary commitment. Those honored included Jasper Carls from the HSG Uni Greifswald e.V. and Kian Rahbarnia from the Shotokan Karate Dojo Greifswald e.V. Jeannette Denz from Greifenpower Athletics e.V. and Robin Settgast from Greifswalder FC e.V. were also pleased about the recognition.
Recognition for valuable commitment
The award is not only a form of thanks, but also sets an example for the importance of volunteerism in sport. As the city of Greifswald emphasizes in its announcement, these honors are intended not only to honor sporting successes, but also to recognize voluntary commitment in roles such as trainer or board member. Five of those honored received badges of honor, including Stefan Hafermann from Greifswalder FC e.V. and Sibylle Wentzel from Aerobic & Aqua “Greif” e.V.
In addition, Manh Dao Duc, a young trainer, was awarded an honorary award. The award is intended to motivate the next generation of trainers and encourage them to actively participate in sport. These measures are part of a broader initiative that also has support at national level. The federal government has already announced clear steps to strengthen volunteer work, including increases in the flat rate for trainers and volunteer work, such as Federal Government reported.
A sign of solidarity
The Sports Day of Honor in Greifswald not only stands for sporting achievements, but also for community cohesion. In times when volunteer work counts more than ever, it is important to focus on the selflessness and commitment of the many volunteers.
