Thunderstorm alarm in Bavaria: Storm front threatens with storms and heavy rain!
A summer weekend in Bavaria could soon turn out to be a bit stormy. Today, July 16, 2025, a thunderstorm front is moving into Bavaria, and the warnings from meteorologists are causing a stir. The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned of various storms affecting several districts. Regions such as Donau-Ries and Dillingen an der Donau, which have to expect heavy rain and small-grain hail, are particularly affected. The weather situation also remains tense in Swabia, while fortunately the first warnings have already expired in Upper Bavaria. But anyone who breathes a sigh of relief now shouldn't rejoice too soon - things remain dynamic.
As Merkur reports, temperatures rose at the beginning of the week, while the thunderstorm cells were already active in southern Germany and are potentially moving towards Bavaria. The first wave of thunderstorms occurred on the afternoon of July 14th and brought heavy rain and hail in some places. In cities such as Augsburg, Fürstenfeldbruck and Dachau, citizens can expect intense weather events today, especially towards the evening.
Current warning levels
The DWD has issued different warning levels, which together paint a worrying picture. The warning levels include:
- Stufe 1: Wetterwarnungen
- Stufe 2: Warnungen vor markantem Wetter
- Stufe 3: Unwetterwarnungen
- Stufe 4: Warnungen vor extremem Unwetter
There are currently no severe weather warnings in Bavaria, as can be read on BR. However, the situation is tense and there is a heat warning and a UV warning in place.
Dynamic weather conditions
The storm front is not just limited to one region. Unwetterzentrale shows an overview that is relevant for travelers and drivers in Bavaria. Severe weather warnings, which are divided into advance warnings (YELLOW) and acute warnings (ORANGE, RED, VIOLET), provide information about the danger situation. While advance warnings are sent out up to 48 hours in advance, acute warnings indicate an established danger. The storm could cause slippery roads, particularly in areas such as the Spessart, the Rhön and the Bavarian Forest. Drivers should be particularly careful here.
The forecast for the coming days is alarming: we could experience a heat wave that brings pleasant temperatures, but also has the potential for torrential rain thunderstorms. With temperatures up to 40 degrees in Germany and over 30 degrees in Bavaria, the coming weekend could be a real test for the weather.
The next few days will show whether the predicted storms actually materialize. Anyone traveling in relevant regions should always keep themselves informed about the current weather conditions and pay attention to warnings.
