The 79th Greifswald Bach Week began on June 16, 2025, with the motto “Bach family”. The event, which runs until June 22nd, is artistic directed by Prof. Frank Dittmer and offers a full program focusing on the family of Johann Sebastian Bach. The works of his ancestors and Bach's sons, such as Johann Christoph, Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, receive particular attention. [NDR] reports on a wealth of musical events that will delight both young and old.
Greifswald has a tradition with this event that goes back to 1946, when the first “Bach Days” were launched after the Second World War under the direction of Hans and Annelise Pflugbeil. What is particularly noteworthy is that Greifswald was one of the few undestroyed cities after the war, which contributed to the realization of these cultural highlights.
A concert full of emotions
This year's Bach Week focuses not only on music, but also on aspects of family history, including death and grief. Program items such as Gottfried Heinrich Bach’s “Moving Story” promise to offer deeply moving experiences. In addition, special concerts are offered to deal with blows of fate through motet compositions. [Church MV] highlights that these emotional themes are just as important as the music itself.
The opening concert took place on June 16th at 8 p.m. in St. Nikolai Cathedral, organized by the Hanover Girls Choir. Daily morning music and the “Christus” oratorio with works by Johann Sebastian Bach round off the program. There are special offers for younger visitors such as the organ concert for children and the student dance project.
Family-friendly offers
The Bach Week is particularly family-friendly thanks to the introduction of a “family ticket”, which is available for groups of four or more people. This includes not only your own children, but also friends who are viewed as family. This enables a relaxed visit for all generations, which is why the organizers are expecting around 10,000 visitors. The organizer, the Nordkirche, is cooperating with the University of Greifswald to offer a diverse and appealing program.
To celebrate the 275th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death, numerous events are planned in Germany to honor his musical legacy. Sites such as his birthplace Eisenach or the Bach House, where historical instruments can be discovered, attract music lovers from all over the world. [Germany Travel] highlights the exciting variety of activities that underline its importance over the centuries.
The Greifswald Bach Week remains a cultural highlight that immerses viewers in the world of one of the greatest composers in music history. With its great focus on the family of Johann Sebastian Bach, it offers a feast for the senses and a family get-together that inspires across generations.
