New building over the Peene: 421 million euros for Wolgast Bridge!

On November 28, 2025, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania took an important step towards the development of the region's infrastructure. The contract for the new construction of the bridge over the Peene, as part of the Wolgast bypass, has been awarded. Financing is secured because the federal government has released the necessary funds. This is reported by the [MV state government](https://www.strassen-mv.de/de/presse/information/?id=216196&processor=processor.sa.press release).

The bidding consortium led by the Swiss company Implenia Civil Engineering GmbH will build the bridge. The contract costs amount to a whopping 421 million euros. In total, the Wolgast bypass project costs around 500 million euros, which shows how high the investment volume for the transport connection is.

Technical details of the bridge

As for the bridge itself, it has impressive specifications. It will have a total length of 1.4 kilometers and a clear height of 42 meters above the Peenestrom. This enables ship traffic without the need for bridge openings. The height of the pylons will be 70 meters, while the width of the two-lane road will be 8 meters. This planning will finally relieve the bottleneck that has traditionally had to struggle with traffic jams on the mainland and the island of Usedom.

A central goal of the project is to direct traffic flows more efficiently and to improve the connection between the A 20 motorway, the island of Usedom and the port and industrial location of Wolgast. The bridge is therefore not only a transport route, but also an important part of the regional economy.

Interactive overview of bridges in Germany

In a further context, it is worth mentioning that the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure has developed an interactive map that allows users to access information on all bridge structures that are under construction by the federal government. This map offers various filter options and a search index, allowing interested citizens to search for information on specific buildings.

The new interactive display makes it easier to obtain and evaluate data not only on the Wolgaster Bridge, but also on many other structures. This shows once again how important the digital infrastructure is for users.
