700 self-help groups in M/V: support for all situations!
A lot is happening in the area of self-help in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania! Around 700 self-help groups are active and support people with various challenges. This number was announced by Social Affairs Minister Stefanie Drese during a state parliament debate. Their commitment to self-help shows how important exchange and emotional support are within these groups.
But that's not all: the number of contact points for those affected has increased from six to nine. Where are these contact points? In Wismar, Hagenow, Neustrelitz, Schwerin, Güstrow, Rostock, Neubrandenburg, Stralsund and Pasewalk, those affected now have the opportunity to find support and communicate with each other.
Promoting self-help
Another step in the right direction is increasing financial resources for self-help work. In the 2024/25 double budget, the funding was increased from 135,000 to almost 144,000 euros annually. The aim is to make access to the groups easier and ensure the quality of the work. “Self-help offers support and exchange for people with challenges or illnesses,” says Drese, emphasizing the importance of these initiatives.
The non-profit organization is also one of the active groups in MV SELF HELP M/V e.V., which is led by a volunteer board. This organization represents the interests of chronically ill and disabled people and their relatives and works independently of political or religious affiliations.
Diverse offers for those affected
The website of the self-help participants not only offers information about the member associations, but also enables targeted searches for specific topics, for example on Parkinson's disease. But even for chronic illnesses without their own regional associations, there is no complete list of self-help groups in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. However, those affected can contact the office if they have any questions.
Thanks to these initiatives and the committed work of the self-help groups, people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can hope to find the support they need. The new structure and funding will certainly help even more people to benefit from the offers.
