87-year-old Helga on a European tour: Unforgettable adventures in a vintage motorhome!
What could be better than traveling with a loved one - especially if you do it in your own RV? Dietmar Hesse and his 87-year-old mother Helga show that the desire to travel knows no age. The two set off to discover Europe in their trusty motorhome, a Tischer motorhome from 1987. Her journey takes her, among other places, to Helga's homeland, Poland.
The story of Dietmar and Helga has its roots 30 years ago, when Dietmar's parents bought a VW T3. Back then, that was the beginning of countless trips to the south of France, Italy and the North and Baltic Seas. After Dietmar's father died in 2012, Dietmar decided in 2017 to move from Trier to Boitzenburg in the Uckermark to be with his mother. Four years later, the two started their travel adventure together, which began in the tranquil Uckermark.
An exceptional motorhome
Dietmar's motorhome is truly unique. Only 29 models were manufactured at the time, and the extensive equipment leaves nothing to be desired. Amenities include a two-burner gas stove, refrigerator, toilet, shower, heating, hot water boiler and a pressurized water system. In addition, Dietmar made some adjustments himself, including a new wardrobe and a solar system. “I didn’t want to share the cramped space with my mother,” he explains with a smile.
However, due to the special requirements for old motorhomes, Dietmar also has to overcome challenges. A new EU law requires vehicles over 3.5 tonnes to have a tachograph. This is slowing him down a bit at the moment, as his motorhome has around 400,000 kilometers on the clock and he feels compromised.
Travel plans and legal changes
The trip to Poland is a matter of the heart for both of them. “We always find a place to stay for the night,” notes Helga, whose enthusiasm for traveling remains unbroken. Nevertheless, they are also looking ahead to the coming changes: From 2028, motorhomes with a total weight of up to 4.25 tonnes will be allowed to be driven with a class B car driving license. This regulation, which still needs to be approved by the European Parliament, will open up new opportunities for many motorhome enthusiasts as weight restrictions will be relaxed from this point onwards. The new regulation creates space for better-equipped models with more safety technology, which is particularly advantageous for the caravan industry t-online.de.
The market for motorhomes and caravans is booming, and Civd reports current new registration figures that underline the growing popularity of this vehicle class. Confidence in caravanning remains unbroken and the industry is optimistic about the future civd.de.
Dietmar and Helga are examples for many who love the adventure of travel. They not only travel the streets of Europe in their motorhome, but also show how wonderful it is to create memories together. Their positive attitude and joy in new discoveries are contagious and invite you to dare to take the journey yourself!
