Danger! New quishing scam discovered at parking machines!
A new fraud attempt is underway in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: the “Quishing” method has been launched. Fraudsters cover existing QR codes on parking ticket machines with fake stickers. These then lead unsuspecting users to fake websites where they are asked to pay contactless. The first warnings were issued by the city of Waren, the Neubrandenburg police station, the Hanseatic city of Rostock and the Rostock police headquarters. Uckermark courier reports that five parking ticket machines in Waren have already been affected.
The particularly insidious QR codes are attached to the following machines: Festplatz, Müritzeum parking lot, Ärztehaus am Kietz, Kietzstraße 1 and Steinmole. Citizens are called upon to immediately report suspicious stickers to the Office of Citizen Services or the police. “It’s better to take a closer look,” said the authorities. Especially since this fraud does not only occur in goods: there have also been similar incidents in cities such as Parchim, Stralsund, Binz and Schwerin. Loud daily news For example, fraudulent QR codes were also discovered in Wismar.
Rapidly increasing claims
The numbers speak for themselves: by mid-June 2024, the damage to goods caused by this fraud amounted to 209.98 euros - a year ago it was only 70.50 euros. While only two cases of damage were reported in 2024, the police are already looking at seven incidents this year. This shows that crime is poised to grow rapidly and one should always keep an eye out. A fundamental sign of danger is also anomalies such as the absence of umlauts (e.g. “ae” instead of “ä”) on the fake pages as well as the possible duration of parking times that go beyond the permitted options.
In view of these events, the police strongly advise you to download the official parking app and only use it for QR code scans. When scanning, always pay attention to whether the codes have been pasted over. If you suspect fraud, it is advisable to contact the police immediately, inform the bank and call the emergency number 116116. Uckermark courier and daily news also warn about websites not only affected by parking ticket machines, but also false bank letters, QR codes pasted over on charging stations and fake parking tickets, which can also be found on buses and trains.
So it's up to each individual to protect themselves and be vigilant. Keep your eyes open and report any abnormalities to the responsible authorities as quickly as possible!
