A new film that will make audiences smile and think is just around the corner: “Wilma wants more” will be released in local cinemas on July 31st. The leading actress Fritzi Haberlandt, known from the popular series “Babylon Berlin”, will present the film personally in Neustrelitz. A special highlight is the film discussion with her on August 3rd at 7:30 p.m. in the charming Fabrik Cinema, which is located in the Old Tiled Stove Factory. The film runs until August 6th at 8:15 p.m.

Wilma, who is played by Fritzi Haberlandt, is a complex character. After a series of relationship and professional setbacks, she finds herself in a new, surprising life situation at the age of over 40. Her path took her from the Lusatian lignite mining area via Vienna to the craftsmen's area. There she not only discovers the challenges of life, but also new feelings and even love. The director is Maren-Kea Freese, who has created a successful mix of weird humor and optimistic melancholy.

A film about new beginnings

The dramaturgy in “Wilma wants more” deals with the uncertainties of a future in which everything is possible. With her diverse experience of countless certificates and disappointments, such as when her husband leaves her for another woman while he cooks spaghetti, Wilma encounters a world full of new possibilities. Tiresome job hunting in hardware stores and sudden apartment changes to a left-wing bohemian shared apartment cause her to struggle, but she transforms and ultimately becomes a repair specialist - a real advancement that captivates the audience. Wilma's story impressively shows how, despite such setbacks, one can find the courage to break new ground.

The importance of female perspectives in film

“Wilma Wants More” joins a recent tradition of films that focus on stronger and more complex female characters. Although we have made progress in recent decades, many challenges remain. The discussion about the representation of women in the film industry shows that women are often still assigned to stereotypical roles. Historically, they have often been portrayed in passive or dependent roles, thanks to today's feminist filmmakers such as Chantal Akerman and Agnès Varda, who have called for a more realistic perspective. In her film “Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles” (1975), Akerman impressively criticizes the patriarchal system.

Although the modern film industry shows a positive trend towards diversification, the reality often falls short of what is necessary. For example, according to some studies, women did less speaking than men in the top-grossing films of 2018. However, more and more films with strong female characters are contributing to changing society's perception of gender roles. It is crucial that we see an even broader and more authentic representation of women in cinema in the future in order to enable a positive influence on women's self-image.

Tickets for “Wilma wants more” are already available for sale at the Fabrik-Kino. This film promises not only an entertaining evening, but also stimulating conversations about important social issues. Be there and be inspired!
