High-rise building fire in Hong Kong: New death toll shocks the world!

A devastating fire in a high-rise complex in Hong Kong has inflicted serious wounds on the city. Today, November 28, 2025, the authorities report an increasing number of victims. The index has now reached 83 fatalities and around 80 people, including many firefighters, are injured. The fire broke out on Wednesday, November 27, at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in the Tai Po district and quickly spread to several neighboring buildings. The appearance and spread of the fire represent one of the worst fire disasters in Hong Kong in recent decades.

The firefighting work, involving over 1,200 firefighters, continues on Friday morning. It is expected that the fire brigade will be able to reach all apartments in the seven high-rise buildings by mid-morning. So far, more than 55 people have been rescued alive from the towers, while more than 250 people are missing. The situation has plunged the city into a profound crisis, and emergency shelters have been set up for over 900 affected residents. In addition, over 1,000 hotel and hostel rooms are available to provide people with temporary shelter.

Investigations and security concerns

The exact cause of the fire is still unclear, but the investigation has already produced initial results. Three men from a construction company were arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide. Political leaders are under pressure, particularly as there are concerns about the safety of the materials used. According to initial reports, non-fire-safety materials may have been used in the renovations, which were based on bamboo scaffolding - a traditional construction method in Hong Kong from the 1980s.

Given the catastrophic situation, the Hong Kong government plans to switch from bamboo scaffolding to steel scaffolding to minimize future safety risks. This concern gained additional momentum given the tragic circumstances. In addition to the immediate measures, the need for comprehensive safety inspections of all construction sites is also being urgently discussed.

A share of grief and help

The city government has set up a HK$300 million emergency relief fund to provide financial support to affected families. Aid payments of up to 1,200 euros should flow to the surviving dependents. Psychological support is also offered to help traumatized residents. Supporters from the public and organizations have also been mobilized - around 200 helpers are ready to provide initial care.

In this tragic situation, the question arises as to how the city can deal with such dramatic events in the future. The debate over fire safety precautions is likely to be one of the central issues in Hong Kong's future. Given the high number of victims and devastation, the city is facing an uncertain future.
