Jonathan Bailey: From bullying victim to LGBT+ hero in schools!
British actor Jonathan Bailey, known for the Netflix series “Bridgerton” and the current film “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” recently spoke about his experiences as a gay teenager. In a revealing interview, he said that school was often like a straitjacket for him. “I didn’t feel safe and my identity wasn’t celebrated,” recalls the 37-year-old. The topics of fear, depression and bullying in particular are part of his personal history, which still shapes him today. Today he speaks about these experiences and is actively involved in raising awareness about the LGBTQ community. The Nordkurier reported on his retrospectives and how they inspired him to help other young people.
Most recently, Bailey was appointed patron of the LGBT+ youth organization Just Like Us. This organization works closely with schools and young people across the UK to support and educate LGBT+ young people. In his new role, Bailey will promote programs that create safe spaces for students and place ambassadors in schools to talk about Allyship. “I’m proud to support Just Like Us and increase the visibility of their mission,” Bailey said.
Commitment to youth
Just Like Us programs include supporting over 6,000 schools during School Diversity Week in June, an important time to celebrate diversity and acceptance. Laura Mackay, the organization's executive director, emphasized in an interview how important it is for children to feel recognized and supported. She pointed out that LGBT+ youth often face greater challenges, such as bullying and mental health issues. Public figures like Jonathan Bailey play a crucial role in raising awareness of these issues.
The organization's work is important to many students as it often helps create a safe environment. Bailey himself has had to feel these experiences firsthand: “It is essential that we talk about these issues so that no students feel alone,” he said, emphasizing the need for openness and understanding in schools.
A look into Bailey's career
Through his role as Anthony Bridgerton in the popular series “Bridgerton,” Bailey has gained not only prominence as an actor but also as a role model. In addition, he was named “Sexiest Man Alive” of 2025 by “People” in early November. His new role as Prince Fiyero in the “Wicked” films, the second part of which is coming to German cinemas these days, brings him further into the public eye and to a wider audience.
Jonathan Bailey's commitment to the LGBTQ community is a bright spot in the theater and film scene. His courage to speak about his own story and encourage others to live their identities is exemplary and necessary. The actor is valued not only for his roles, but also for his compassion and support for vulnerable groups.
