Neustrelitz awakens democracy: New children's parliament started!
Things are lively in Neustrelitz: A new children's parliament has opened its doors; the highly motivated 16-member committee consists of children in grades one to four from the Sandberg primary school as well as the little ones from the associated daycare center. The newly founded club was launched in September 2025 with the aim of giving children a say in everyday school and after-school care and introducing them to democratic processes at an early stage. The young members are not only trained in elections, but also learn what it means to respect rules and make compromises, as NDR reports.
As part of the new project, the children meet their need for participation and active shaping of their environment with a lot of commitment and creativity. The first topics discussed in the children's parliament revolved around the popular sport of football - a frequent topic of conflict in everyday after-school care. Here the children not only learn fairness, but also the importance of treating each other with respect. The aim is not only to find solutions to everyday problems, but also to promote an awareness of responsibility in the community, as the Strelitzius Project explains.
Participation and democracy
It becomes particularly exciting when the children can bring in their concerns, ideas and wishes in order to actively participate in shaping everyday school and after-school care. The young parliamentarians receive support from experienced educational specialists and multiplier Wibke Seifahrt, who are accompanied and supported at the meetings. It is crucial that the children understand that not every wish can be implemented; What is crucial, however, is the transparency of the decisions. This is seen as an important step towards active participation in everyday education.
The federal program “Living Democracy!” actively promotes this project, which not only contributes to democracy education, but also sets an example for fairer coexistence in everyday school and after-school care. At a time when early participation is becoming increasingly important, Neustrelitz has launched an exemplary initiative with its children's parliament.
