The value of school bags has also changed over the years. While in the past it was mainly sweets that determined the contents, today parents often spend a lot of money on the bags. Estimates suggest that the cost varies between 3 and 40 euros, while the contents can cost between 5 and 100 euros. This shows that starting school is not only an important turning point for children, but also a major social celebration, like WZ reported.
In some regions, such as Leipzig, initiatives such as the “Sugar Bag Campaign” even ensure that all children, including refugee children, are provided with a school bag. This shows that the custom is not just a tradition, but also has social dimensions.
