A sport with tradition and heart
The enthusiasm for volleyball is not only noticeable in Neustrelitz - the sport has developed into a cultural phenomenon worldwide. Invented by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1895, volleyball has grown from its humble origins as “mintonette” to become one of the most popular sports in the world. It was originally intended as a less strenuous alternative to basketball for older YMCA members, however U.S. soldiers during World War I helped popularize it internationally, particularly in Eastern Europe. Today, volleyball is regulated by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), which organizes numerous competitions, including the World Championships and the Olympic Games.
The dynamics of the game attract not only players, but also sponsors who contribute to the economic importance of the sport of volleyball. Sponsorship, media attention and the creation of new jobs allow the sport to continue to grow. Particularly noteworthy is beach volleyball, which attracts a large number of spectators, especially at the Olympic Games, and has therefore found its own place in pop culture. The history of volleyball is not only one of technology and talent, but also of a passionate community that supports the sport on and off the field.
