Strelitz Dukes II triumph: 3rd place at the hot tournament in Berlin!

The Strelitz Dukes second team made a strong statement last weekend at the Wild Grizzlies tournament game day in Berlin. In summer temperatures of 32 °C, the young athletes showed what they were made of and secured third place in the tournament, which was part of the Regional Flag Football League. In an exciting course, consisting of group games, a semi-final and final placement games, the Dukes not only demonstrated their skills, but also their fighting spirit.

In the preliminary round, the Strelitz Dukes 2 were allowed to compete against the Berlin Pandas right from the start and won with a clear 28:6. The euphoria didn't last long, however, because in the second game they had to admit defeat to the Lichtenberg Lions 2 with 13:34. The semi-final against the favored Berlin Kobras also ended unfortunately: The Dukes 2 lost 26:38. But giving up is not her style.

Fuss about third place

In the decisive game for third place, the Strelitz Dukes 2 met the Lichtenberg Lions 2 again and were able to get revenge. With a confident 31:20 they finally secured third place. The support of four players from the Tollense Sharks from Neubrandenburg was extremely helpful in these crucial moments. This underlines the positive cooperation between the two teams, which is becoming increasingly important in the region.

The Strelitz Dukes, which formed from a group of football-loving young adults, have been renting a sports field for training since summer 2021 and have established themselves as a fixture in regional sports. Since founding its own section at Strelitzer FC in autumn 2021, the group has grown steadily and has now joined the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Football and Cheerleading Association and has a license for the German Flag Football League. Flag football, a variant of American football, allows for a lower-contact style of play in which players are stopped by pulling a flag.

Flag Football – an emerging sport

Flag football itself has an interesting history. Originally from the USA, it was first played organized in the 1930s. The sport has since expanded greatly, and today there are approximately 20 million active players in over 100 countries worldwide. With the planned tournaments and inclusion in the Olympic program for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, flag football could continue to grow in popularity in the coming years. The sport is enjoying growing popularity, particularly in Germany, where there are over 150 active leisure and league teams.

The Strelitz Dukes 2 are currently in 16th place in the overall standings of the regional league with 10 points after two tournaments. Team manager Valentin Lunkenheimer sees the potential of his team and the cooperation with the Tollense Sharks extremely positively and courageously to take the next step in the league.

The performance of the Strelitz Dukes 2 shows that flag football is not just a sport, but also a community experience that brings many people together. With a strong team spirit and support from the region, they are well prepared for the challenges ahead.

Strelitzius reports that the team is now looking forward to the rest of the season. Information about the Strelitz Dukes can also be found on their official website. Interested readers can read the exciting history of flag football at flagfootball.rocks.
