Crisis of trust in the SPD: Bärbel Bas demands clarification with the Union!

Tension in Germany's political landscape: SPD leader Bärbel Bas is under pressure after the withdrawal of constitutional judge candidate Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf. The botched election of the judges has not only put a strain on their group, but has also shaken trust in the Union. Bas calls for a clarifying conversation with the Union to clarify the situation, as she finds the coalition partner's behavior unacceptable. Jens Spahn, the Union parliamentary group leader, was unable to guarantee support for Brosius-Gersdorf, which led to her backing out, reports the SVZ.

The CDU and CSU MPs rejected the SPD candidate because of her stance on abortion. The SPD even suspects a targeted disinformation campaign that also took place on social media. These developments are creating a tense atmosphere within the social democratic ranks.

Change of leadership in the SPD

Former Bundestag President Bas has also decided to take over the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs after initially resisting this responsibility. She not only advocates for renewal in the party, but also suggests that civil servants, MPs and the self-employed should pay into pension insurance. Nevertheless, the SPD faces a personnel problem as Bas is the only serious challenger to North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst.

Loss of trust in institutions

Jan Fischer from SPLENDID RESEARCH attributes the reasons for the loss of trust to economic recession and political decisions. One of the few institutions where trust levels remain constant is the police. The ongoing crisis of trust could have a significant impact on German voting behavior ahead of the 2025 federal election, warns André Wolff.

Political actors are therefore faced with the task of regaining lost trust in order to sustainably stabilize democratic structures and society.
