Woldegker Kegler: New hall in sight for the Bundesliga dream!
In Woldegk there is fresh news from the world of bowling. The SG Mühlenwind bowlers are in the starting blocks to expand their sporting home. The plan is to build a new bowling hall, which could raise the sporting commitment of local bowlers to a new level. Loud SVZ A Woldegk sports center is to be expanded to include a four-lane bowling facility, but financial resources are the biggest headache here.
In a promising twist, the Woldegk bowlers have set their sights on a long hall at the entrance to the town that was formerly used for a furniture exchange. This hall not only offers enough space for the planned activities, but could also be quickly converted into a suitable bowling location. The first discussions have already taken place with Ronny Lepczyk, the bowling/badminton section manager. The goal is clear: all official contracts should be concluded by the end of the year.
The bowlers and their careers
The success story of the bowlers from Woldegk cannot go unmentioned. The men in the bowling section already play in the 2nd Bundesliga and have fought for a solid place in recent years. The core team has been playing together since 2000 and has achieved some success in the past, including state championships in the 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2022/23 seasons. Their promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga took place in the 2023/24 season in Lüneburg, like that Northern Courier reported.
The bowlers are currently faced with a new challenge: The home games will take place in Neubrandenburg until the new facility is built, as Woldegk cannot provide the required four-lane facility. However, with the support of sponsors they can cover the costs of hosting the games. In October they will face the relegated team from the 1st Bundesliga, Hansa Stralsund - an exciting duel that increases anticipation! The team has to assert itself against tougher opponents, which won't be easy.
A new wind in bowling
Despite the ambitions in Woldegk, bowling in Germany is under pressure. At a time when many bowling alleys are dying out and the image of bowling is often seen as outdated, initiatives like those of the Woldegker Bowlers are particularly important. According to a report by daily news The number of members in the German Skittles and Bowling Association is shrinking from over 250,000 in the 2000s to just 60,000. These numbers illustrate the challenges facing bowling.
Nevertheless, there is hope - in Woldegk we are already working hard to promote young talent. The club has 16 children who bowl regularly and some of them attend the competitions. What is important here is the close cooperation with the Woldegker School, which enables the young people to get to know bowling. The club's active members also offer weekly care for the kids who have already taken part in tournaments. A new bowling hall could provide new impetus here.
It remains to be seen whether the plans for the new bowling hall at the entrance to Woldegk will be implemented. However, one thing is certain: the commitment of the Woldegk bowlers shows that bowling can remain a heart of the community, even if the general conditions are constantly changing.
