Trees for Rostock: 7,000 plants are waiting for you! Join us!
An exciting event is coming up in Rostock: On November 1, 2025, the annual tree planting campaign “Citizens for Trees” will take place in the Wiethagen forest district. The event is organized by the Rostock Forestry Office in collaboration with the Rostock Zoo and aims to plant around 7,000 new trees. The mixed tree species will include English oaks, winter linden trees, chestnuts and wild fruit trees. Covering an area of around 1.2 hectares, this initiative will not only strengthen the region's green lung, but also make an important contribution to a sustainable approach to nature. [NDR].
“Citizens for Trees” is more than just a planting campaign; The motto brings citizens together to actively shape nature and promote the connection between urban natural experience spaces such as zoos, green spaces and urban forests. The event begins at 10 a.m. at the forest parking lot at the entrance to Hinrichshagen. From there a short walk of around 400 meters leads to the planting area. And of course, a little preparation is required: everyone should bring a spade and sturdy shoes, and a closeness to nature and a willingness to be instructed are also required. Ideal for the whole family, participants will also be provided with offers and information about the planting area during the campaign. As a special treat there is bratwurst, freshly grilled over the campfire!
A family event with added value
The tree planting campaign not only promotes the ecological aspect, but also social and economic added value by involving the population. These types of initiatives support awareness of urban tree cover and reflect an increased interest in environmental education. The importance of such projects is highlighted as part of a current master's thesis that analyzes various tree planting campaigns in Germany. Measures such as the plantings in Kassel, Hamburg and Friedrichshafen show that creative approaches and active citizen participation can sustainably improve a city's tree population. GALK describes that this is also about creating new local recreational areas.
The “Citizens for Trees” campaign is therefore an opportunity not only to strengthen the city’s green infrastructure, but also to unite the community. This is an ideal example of how you can initiate positive change just by getting involved. If you love nature and want to make a contribution, this is the right place for you. The expertise of the forestry department employees also ensures that everything is carried out professionally - so let's go, the trees are waiting to be planted!
