SailGP in Sassnitz: High-speed race in front of chalk cliffs!
Things will get really busy in picturesque Sassnitz on the island of Rügen on August 16th and 17th, 2025, as the city becomes the venue for the sailing Formula 1, known as SailGP. This exciting event, which is very popular in the sailing world, attracts around 10,000 visitors to the coast to experience the spectacular racing against the impressive backdrop of the chalk cliffs. With around 5,600 grandstand seats in the purpose-built racing stadium, there will be enough space for spectators to admire the high-speed catamarans, which can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h.
The SailGP is a global high-speed sailing racing championship founded in 2019 by Russell Coutts and Larry Ellison. Twelve teams from twelve nations are taking part in this fifth season, including the Germany SailGP Team, led by Thomas Riedel and former Formula 1 star Sebastian Vettel. The latter supports the team both as an investor and as a mentor, which gives the German athletes an additional motivational boost. After initial difficulties in Sydney, the team has recently improved and is pushing for promotion from the minus point zone, which only increases the anticipation for the home game in Sassnitz.
The event in detail
The two racing days promise an action-packed program with a total of six races, each lasting between 10 and 15 minutes. The scoring is clearly structured: First place receives 10 points, second place 9 points, and so on. The decisive race takes place between the three best-placed teams, which creates additional excitement. In total, the best team will win $2 million in prize money at the end of the season. ZDF reports that the races will be available live and on demand in the ZDF media library.
Preparations for the event are already in full swing. The construction of the so-called Tech Site in Westhafen starts on July 28th and will last until August 15th, 2025. There will be restrictions during the event to regulate traffic. The road between RügenFisch and the water police will be completely closed until August 29th, and Mukraner Strasse, the entrance to Sassnitz and other roads will also be impassable during peak hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, ticketed visitors and rescue and emergency services will have access. Sassnitz.de continues, stating that there will be shuttle buses from the Mukran car park to make it easier for visitors to travel.
Looking forward to the home game
The participants are also looking forward to the event. Driver Erik Kosegarten-Heil is optimistic and is looking forward to a risk-motivated race. “There's something going on!”, you might say when you see the words of the athlete preparing for an exciting challenge in home waters.
The competitive appeal and the impressive setting in front of one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in Germany make the SailGP in Sassnitz an event that should not be missed. Whether professional or hobby sailor, everyone can look forward to the fast-paced competitions and the unique atmosphere!
