The man entered the train with a beer bottle containing an unknown liquid and set himself and part of the vehicle on fire. Fortunately, the police were able to quickly bring the fire under control with a fire extinguisher, preventing anything worse from happening. The 24-year-old suffered burn injuries in this incident and was taken to a hospital in Lübeck for treatment. A provisional arrest has been made against him and the criminal police are investigating the suspicion of serious arson. The material damage to the tram is estimated at around 3,000 euros. According to Welt this is a serious incident that once again draws attention to the issue of arson.
But it's not just this incident that raises questions. A 21-year-old from the Ludwigslust-Parchim district is also in the focus of the judiciary. He was sentenced in court to three years and two months in prison for aggravated arson. This came after the court found him guilty on six counts. In Weitendorf, the man lit a bundle of reeds next to an inhabited house, which ultimately led to a fire that affected the roof of the building. Fortunately, the residents, a family of four, were able to escape unharmed. These events make it clear how seriously the issue of arson is taken, and the NDR's reporting adds to the picture of a worrying development.
Arson: A Growing Problem?
The current incidents in Schwerin fit into a worrying development regarding arson in Germany. According to a survey by the Federal Criminal Police Office, which collects data until 2024, the cases of arson and the creation of fire hazards have increased in recent years. In the period from 2014 to 2024, a large number of cases were recorded by the police, which - as the figures from Statista show - represents a constantly growing problem. The issue is booming in our society and the authorities are called upon to take decisive action against this threat.

The demand for more security and preventive measures is noticeable, and the population is showing a growing interest in issues of crime and the protection of their own living space. The framework conditions for safe coexistence must be continuously improved.
