Battery trains from 2027: Environmental protection and modernization for MV!
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, something exciting is happening: From the end of 2027, the first battery-operated trains of the East German railway company (ODEG) are to start here. The traffic project, which was symbolically heralded on July 14th with a first special trip between Schwerin and Parchim, comprises 14 new trains, which are used in Westmecklenburg on a total of five routes. The routes range from Rehna to Schwerin to Parchim, but also include routes such as Parchim - Hagenow Stadt and the seasonal traffic from Malchow/Parchim to Plau am See. Ostsee-Zeitung reported that the trains with 98 seats, Comfortable multi -purpose areas and WLAN are equipped and are also barrier -free.
The entire project costs around 18 million euros, with funding of over 11 million euros from the state budget for the expansion of the maintenance workshop in Parchim. This expansion includes several measures, including the construction of a workshop hall, additional storage space and a modern charging infrastructure for the battery drugging tracts. With these investments, not only the trains should be kept in good shape, but also new jobs in the region are to be created and secured.
technical details and challenges
The battery trains, delivered by the manufacturer Stadler, will have a range of around 100 kilometers. This is more than enough to operate 80 percent of the non -electrified routes in Germany. The batteries of the trains can be charged on route sections with overhead line and in the new workshop. As early as December 2025, modernized diesel railcars of the Regioshuttle type are to be used, which are gradually replaced by the new battery electrical multiple units by the end of 2027.
a step towards climate neutrality
The introduction of battery trains is not only an innovation step for the region, but also an important part of the strategy for reducing CO2 emissions in traffic. Deutsche Bahn has set itself the goal of becoming climate -neutral by 2040, focusing on low -emission drive technologies. The use of battery trains represents significant progress in this project, since they represent an environmentally friendly alternative for local transport. -Deutsche Bahn.
While other federal states like Schleswig-Holstein already have the first battery trains, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania could win a real lead in the area of sustainable mobility with these new trains. The anticipation for the new technologies and the associated changes in local transport increases, and not only the commuters, but very Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania awaits the arrival of the battery-operated trains.
