Construction begins for the Ehrhardt Museum: A cultural highlight in Plushow!

An exciting day for Plushow: OnOctober 26, 2025The groundbreaking ceremony for the planned Ehrhardt Museum was celebrated. The initiators are thus settingDr. Jens EhrhardtandElke Weicht-Ehrhardt, a significant step towards realizing their dream of building a private art museum in the courtyard of the Plushow castle, directly opposite the former warehouse. The planning of the museum not only provides spaces for exhibitions, but also aims to create a cultural center for the region. The architectural design comes fromFrancis Kere, a renowned architect, and is being realized in collaboration with partnerships such as the art support association at Plushow Castle. The planned museum is intended to be in harmony with nature through sustainably designed buildings made of wood and clay and with large window fronts. A coffee and a roof garden are also provided. The idea is to combine art, nature and encounters - a place where guests can feel comfortable.

Art and sustainability in focus

The municipality of Upahl drew up a development plan in November 2024 and decided to sell the required land. This not only ensures an increase in cultural offerings in the region, but also increases the economic opportunities of the regionArt and cultural industriesas well as thetourismin northwest Mecklenburg. If the plans are successfully implemented, the museum could represent a valuable economic factor. This is also a goal of the North West Mecklenburg Economic Development Agency, which is supporting the project as part of an EU funding project. The sole shareholder is the district of Nordwestmecklenburg. According to the information from WFG-NWM, the focus on sustainability plays a central role in planning and operation.

The museum's main exhibition will include, among others, works byAlfred Ehrhardt, the father of Dr. Jens Ehrhardt, show. In order to improve access to art and promote equal opportunities, discussions are also underway about gastronomic offerings and opportunities for artists. Support from federal funding could help here: As part of the “Investments in nationally important cultural institutions in Germany” program, projects can support up to20 million eurosreceived annually, as kulturstaatsminister.de explains.

With a view to certification as a national cultural institution, the Ehrhardt Museum may be able to hope for significant financial support. The federal government covers up to50 percentof project expenses. However, the applications must be submitted by the highest state authority for culture.
