The bat in Schwerin: A colorful journey through time into the prefabricated building drama
A touch of nostalgia and a little dash of humor: The operetta “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss II is currently celebrating its big premiere at the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater in Schwerin. Staged by the talented director Stephanie Schimmer, who also celebrated her 43rd birthday on the opening day, the new performance brings the charming story about the bon vivant Gabriel von Eisenstein in a completely fresh light.
In this production, which will be on stage until mid-November 2025 and includes a total of five performances, the action is set in a prefabricated building ambience of the late 1980s. This temporal shift is not only a creative decision, but also an opportunity to shed light on social structures in the GDR. Torsten Mittelstädt's stage designs with high-rise facades and typical furniture invite the audience to travel back in time. The viewer is taken into the world of yellow floral wallpaper and cassette recorders, which reflect the attitude to life of that time, as [NDR](https://www.ndr.de/kultur/buehne/theaterbericht/mecklenburg_vorpommern/die-fledermaus-in- Schwerin-ostalgie-reise-in- Plattenbau,fledermaus-132.html) reports.
A modern flair with unmistakable charm
The plot of the operetta revolves around the main character Gabriel von Eisenstein, played by Sebastian Köppl, who is actually on the way to prison, but is attacked by Dr. Falke is invited to a lavish party. Falke, brilliantly portrayed by Martin Gerke, has a plan for revenge based on a prank that Eisenstein experienced at the time. This constellation ensures complex and entertaining moments, which complement the ensemble with the impressive Anna Graf as Adele and the pompously decorated Laila Salome Fischer as Orlowskaya.
But it's not all just fun: critics accuse the direction of lacking originality and depth compared to previous productions. While the ensemble has been increased thanks to various guest appearances, such as Albert Memeti as Alfred and Lemmi Lembcke as Frosch, the acoustic placement behind the stage seems to be a challenge. A circumstance that sometimes poses problems for the Staatskapelle under Dominik Beykirch, as the [Nordkurier](https://www.nordkurier.de/regional/mecklenburg-vorpommern/die-fledermaus-im-Schweriner- Plattenbau-ein-quaentchen-leichtigkeit-misst-4017303) notes.

The “Fledermaus” is not only a piece of timeless music history, but also offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in a past full of ups and downs with a wink. Johann Strauss II's work remains an integral part of operetta culture and provides an inexhaustible source of inspiration for directors and performers worldwide, as can be seen in the extensive list of his operettas.
