The Störtebeker exhibition in Warin: On the trail of the myth!

The fascinating story of Klaus Störtebeker, one of the most famous privateers of the Middle Ages, is currently coming to life in the exhibition “Störtebeker. The Whole Truth” in Warin. The show is not only a highlight for history buffs, but also takes visitors on a journey through the era of pirate existence and power games in medieval Mecklenburg until November 15, 2025.

A large part of the exhibition is dedicated to Störtebeker's life and links this remarkable character with the region. Surprise spreads through the ranks of visitors, who increasingly recognize the connection between Störtebeker and places like Warin, Sternberg and Wismar. Warin city manager Tom Clauß in particular emphasizes that the exhibition clearly distinguishes itself from other projects, especially a controversial show in Rostock that questions the Störtebeker myth, and does so with a well-founded approach.

Myth and truth

"Störtebeker. The Whole Truth" stands out by relying on historical sources that were examined in detail by a Hamburg scientist. Not only are the legends surrounding the famous pirate illuminated, but new insights into his involvement in the power apparatus of his time are also presented. Hans Leip, a writer, linked Störtebeker with Klaus Alkun in his novel “Godeke's Knecht,” which further fueled the creation of legends around the figure. What is surprising is the clear positioning of the exhibition, which goes against the theories of the University of Rostock on the existence of the Famous Pirate.

The exhibition is already attracting many visitors - over 100 were particularly enthusiastic last weekend. The show not only promises interesting insights into the history of Mecklenburg, but also entertaining exhibits such as a replica of the gold treasure from 1545 and a replica of Störtebeker's skull. A schnapps made especially for the exhibition with the auspicious name “Störtebekers Gold” is also available to all visitors.

The man behind the myth

Klaus Störtebeker, lived around 1360 to 1401 and was the leader of the Vitalien brothers, better known as Likedeeler. Contemporary sources about him are rare, which gave rise to numerous myths. It is assumed that he comes from either Rotenburg (Wümme) or Wismar. His fame arose not only from his adventures at sea, but also from his contacts with kings such as Albrecht of Sweden and his raids on Hanseatic ships.

His end came between October 20th and 21st, 1401, when he was executed in Hamburg after being captured in April of the same year. There is speculation about the legends surrounding his execution; Perhaps the best known is that he made an offer in exchange for the lives of townspeople. It remains unclear to what extent these stories come close to reality.

The Störtebeker Fountains in Verden and the popular Störtebeker Festival on Rügen are just some of the many honors bestowed on the legendary pirates. The exhibition in Warin brings all of this together and shows how complex and exciting Klaus Störtebeker's legacy actually is.

Visit the exhibition in Warin and be inspired by the captivating story of a man who became a symbol of freedom and being a pirate. Nostalgia and history come together here and offer a unique insight.
