Inclusive sailing on Lake Schwerin: Overcoming borders together!

A look at the activities of the Schwerin Sailing Association (SSV) from 1894 shows how passion for sailing, together with the idea of inclusion, causes a sensation. The club is an oasis for everyone who loves sport - regardless of physical, mental or social limitations. It's about the shared experience on Lake Schwerin, where each participant can learn to steer a boat and take on responsibility. Loud NDR The fun is not neglected and the joy of the young people is fully evident.

Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the SSV is open to all social groups. People aged 14 to 28 from various social projects are welcome here. Every two to three weeks, up to ten young people with various disabilities meet to go out on the water together. Kai Erichsen, the brains behind the project, has a clear goal: to promote team spirit and experience in nature.

Funding projects and inclusion

The model of the Schwerin Sailing Club is not alone. In Germany there is the “Sailing Team Germany” (STG e.V.) project, which sees itself, among other things, as a support association for the German national sailing team. The club is committed to inspiring more than 10,000 people with disabilities to take part in inclusive sailing. Their initiatives include training series for sailing clubs to improve inclusion in club work. The project receives support from Aktion Mensch with an impressive amount of 228,300 euros, which underlines the importance of the project, as in Human Action is reported.

It is important that the participants at SSV are actively involved in what is happening. It is not uncommon for people with different disabilities to regularly take part in the sailing experience. The club's extensive boat park, equipped with Rügen dinghies and cutters, offers the perfect setting for this. Adults also have the opportunity to become part of these shared adventures. The SSV is not only a place for young people, but also for adults with its own program for both groups.

Commitment and responsibility

Voluntary work in the club is of central importance. Without the commitment of the volunteers, none of this would be possible. They enable young people to gain experiences that are not only entertaining, but also strengthen self-confidence and promote competence in dealing with challenges. The responsibility that is assumed when steering a boat is a success factor that brings a lot of joy to young people.

With its inclusive orientation, the Schwerin Sailing Club sets a strong example for diversity and togetherness in sport. The openness of the club offers space for personal development and creates an environment in which everyone can feel comfortable. Anyone interested has the opportunity to contact Kai Erichsen directly and become part of this special community - no matter where you come from or what challenges you face.
