Katrin Sass returns to Schwerin: A move with many doubts!

Katrin Sass took the step in autumn 2024 and returned to Schwerin, her hometown. The move from Berlin was not just a change of scenery for the popular actress, but also an emotional challenge. “I initially felt like a stranger in my own homeland,” she admitted on the MDR show “Riverboat.” At first, the move seemed like the biggest mistake of her life. There were also everyday hurdles: a neighbor once had to step in when her moving van got stuck in front of the new front door - a bit of romantic chaos, which, however, only makes the return more human, as the actress smugly remarks.

The actress, born in the GDR in 1961, was gripped by her passion for the performing arts at an early age and completed her training at the “Ernst Busch” Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. Her breakthrough came in 1981 with “Guarantee for a Year,” and since then people in the film and television world have known exactly what talent she has. She became known, among other things, for classics such as “Good Bye, Lenin!” and “Polizeiruf 110” – her acting commitment has earned her many awards, including the German Film Prize for Best Actress.

Longing for home

Despite all her doubts, Katrin Sass feels a deep nostalgia when she thinks of her old childhood room or looks out over Lake Schwerin. “The beauty of my homeland is incomparable,” she says with a beaming smile. They are well known in Schwerin and their return was greeted with joy and enthusiasm by many. She still has relatives in the city, including her brother and cousin, who make her new start in her old home easier.

After years in the capital, it actually felt like a return to roots. “I hesitated for a long time about going back, but now I'm just happy,” she explains when talking about her new life in Schwerin. However, it remains to be seen how her artistic path will develop further. Her career has always been linked to tackling social issues, and her versatility has allowed her to shine in both dramatic and comedic roles.

Recognition for life's work

Katrin Sass was not only recognized for her acting achievements. In September 2025, she received the Golden Hen Honorary Award for her life's work - an award that many of her fans and colleagues considered long overdue. This honor not only testifies to the artistic diversity, but also to its lasting influence on the German cultural scene.

It remains to be hoped that Katrin Sass sees her home in Schwerin not only as a new home, but also as a source of inspiration for future projects. She has weathered major changes with flying colors, and her return could herald a new exciting phase in her already impressive career.
