Lankow fishing enthusiasts get started at the new location – moving with sadness
The fishing enthusiasts at Lankower See are facing a new beginning. After long, loyal years at their location behind the old lung clinic on Lübecker Straße, the anglers have now leased a new place with direct access to the lake. Klaus-Dieter Blacha, the club's chairman, reports with a touch of sadness about the loss of the old site, which had been home to numerous fishing enthusiasts since 1961. But the move also opens up the opportunity for new activities and experiences.
The circumstances behind the move are clear: an investor is planning to build residential buildings on the site of the former clinic. After the dismantling of the old hospital has already been completed, the B plan will be decided after the summer break. The changes have forced fishing enthusiasts to reorient themselves and look after their future. Next to the pumping station on Lübecker Straße, they have now found a property that is ideal for their fishing activities.
New location and support
HTG Hoch- und Tiefbau Gadebusch GmbH generously supported the association with the move and provided several used containers. The club members have already converted these containers for their equipment and even integrated a toilet room and a roof structure. A communal space is also being planned to promote social interaction among members, with the roof already completed, completed on May 3, 2025.
Work on the new location began at the beginning of the year. From the preparation of the site, including the delivery of gravel and the creation of a Benje hedge, to the first video updates about the progress of the construction site, the fishing enthusiasts documented everything. It is important to make the new meeting point attractive and functional for all club members.
City and challenges
But there are also challenges. The fishing enthusiasts are concerned about the additional costs of connecting electricity to the new site, which will be added to the club's lease. You feel a little disadvantaged, especially since the head of the building department, Bernd Nottebaum from the CDU, rejects the anglers' criticism and emphasizes that the city has been accommodating with the structural measures.
Another stumbling block was the building permit for a more than 40 meter long footbridge, which is of central importance for around 130 club members. In this case, the city was proven right, but this gives fishing enthusiasts a feeling of relief because the old surface of the jetty is being reused. Some benches from the previous system were also sensibly integrated into the new area.
The role of angling in society
The fishing enthusiasts at Lankower See are part of a larger trend. The importance of angling goes beyond just catching fish. According to the German Fishing Association, recreational fishing is increasingly seen as valuable for society. Scientific studies, such as those by Prof. Dr. Robert Arlinghaus, show that the acceptance of angling varies depending on the region. While angling is often perceived more positively in the new federal states, there are concerns in the old federal states from an animal and nature conservation perspective.
Nevertheless, fishing remains a popular leisure activity that gives many people a feeling of relaxation and makes an important contribution to water conservation. The fishing enthusiasts in Lankow are now ready to concentrate more on fishing and taking care of the waters. After all, nature is what brought them together and it seems like they are well on their way to achieving their goals in their new surroundings.
