After four years: Schwerin Museum opens after impressive modernization!
Last Thursday, October 30, 2025, there was reason to be happy in Schwerin: The State Museum reopened its doors after four years of intensive modernization work. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, Minister of Culture Bettina Martin and Director Dr. Pirko Kristin Zinnow led the opening ceremony and emphasized how important these renovations are not only for the museum itself, but also for the entire region. In recent years, the historical character of the rooms has been lovingly restored and brought up to modern standards. New programs such as virtual tours, digital treasure hunts and exciting radio plays have also been created.
The newly designed permanent exhibition combines the princely collection with contemporary art and is supplemented by regular temporary exhibitions that address current social issues. Particular emphasis was placed on the Duchamp collection and East German art. In addition, interactive stations, media tables and augmented reality formats ensure that the works of art are conveyed digitally and in an appealing way. Additional leisure activities such as workshops, guided tours, readings, concerts and performances are intended to enrich the visitor experience.
Free entry for four years
There is a particularly pleasant incentive for visitors in the form of the entrance fee: thanks to the generous support of the Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, entry is free for the next four years. This foundation has provided 7.5 million euros for the modernization of the museum alone. In cooperation with the ECE Group, which specializes in project management and design planning and has extensive experience from modernizing the Hamburger Kunsthalle, a great project was put together.
The modernization work was extensive: up to 80 craftsmen were active on the construction site every day. The main entrance was redesigned and expanded to include three entrances to optimize the flow of visitors. What is particularly pleasing is the installation of three new lifting platforms, which enable accessibility for everyone. In addition, various exhibition areas were created by converting depot areas and upgrading the outdoor facilities. Let's take a look at the numbers:
| measure | Number |
|---|---|
| New paint (square meters) | 10,600 |
| Chipped granite flooring (square meters) | 1,200 |
| New wooden floor covering (square meters) | 310 |
| Historical tiled floor refurbished (square meters) | 480 |
| Installed floor tanks for electrical and data supplies | 70 |
| Laid power cables (meters) | 8,000 |
| Data cables laid (meters) | 13,100 |
| Planting areas for perennials and grasses (square meters) | 1,200 |
The Schwerin State Museum, known for its collection of 17th-century Dutch paintings and the impressive animal paintings by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, is now part of one of the few completely preserved historic sites in Germany, which was recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this unique environment, art is conveyed in a new, modern way while remaining true to its roots. Anyone who would like to experience the latest developments in Schwerin's cultural life will find numerous incentives and opportunities in the newly renovated museum. And perhaps, by the way, you will be surprised with one or two new insights.
