Trial in Schwerin: Defendant admits serious child abuse

A shocking trial against a 36-year-old man from near Wismar began today at the Schwerin regional court. The defendant faces huge allegations as he is accused of serious child sexual abuse. According to the information from NDR the man already has a relevant criminal record for possession of child pornographic materials.

The focus of the prosecution is a seven-year-old girl who is the daughter of a friend of the defendant. The acts are said to have taken place over a period of time, with the child being only eight years old when the abuse began. The presiding judge announced that the allegations included sexual intercourse and similar sexual acts that continued until the girl came of age, i.e. until she was nine and a half years old. When the indictment was read out, the defendant confessed to all the crimes, which saved the victim from having to testify again in court. The crime came to light when the girl confided in a therapist. During the investigation, several hundred photos and videos depicting sexual violence against children were found on five of the 36-year-old's smartphones. The focus was also on chats in which the defendant exchanged child pornography material.

A total of four days of negotiations are scheduled for this process. The sentence, which could include a prison sentence of between six years and nine months and seven and a half years, is expected to be handed down on February 10, 2026.
