Schwerin in a jazz frenzy: Festival with Dieter Ilg and new talents!

It's getting musical again in Schwerin! This year's jazz festival will take place from April 23rd to 27th, 2026, and one highlight is certain: the internationally renowned double bassist and composer Dieter Ilg will be part of the program. The festival, organized by the passionate idealist Marianne Wöhrle-Braun, has developed enormously since its modest start as a garden concert with just 30 guests. Today it attracts around 1,000 music lovers who can look forward to a varied program. Schwerin local reports that the Jazz Night has become a real institution in the field of jazz culture in Northern Germany in recent years.

The festival opens with the Azolia Quartet, which sets poems by Rainer Maria Rilke to music in the MV State Library. On the same evening the event “Affaire Bela B.” Dedicated to the late clarinetist Theo Jörgensmann. Another highlight awaits visitors on April 24th, when the opening concert at HN Holding Schwerin with Felix Behrendt and Tomasz Kowalczyk begins at 8 p.m. The event on April 25th also promises to be exciting when the Dieter Ilg Trio performs their piece “Motherland” in the Schelfkirche and at the same time the Jazz 2026 Prize is awarded.

The Jazz Promotion Prize 2024

Speaking of the sponsorship prize: This will be awarded for the third time in 2024 and is endowed with 3,000 euros. The Schwerin Jazz Night It is a concern to support young talents who are active in the field of jazz. An exciting target group are jazz musicians who were born after January 1, 1994, grew up in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and took their first musical steps in jazz in the region.

To apply, various documents must be submitted, such as two representative works in mp3 format as well as CV and information on musical career in PDF format. Special attention will be paid to the first ten applications, and the deadline for applications is March 11, 2024. What is particularly beneficial is that the award winner has the opportunity to organize a concert in Schwerin in 2024 if necessary - but the exact details are still being agreed upon.

The organizing force behind the festival

Marianne Wöhrle-Braun has been the driving force behind this musical highlight for 17 years. It was only in 2023 that she received the sponsorship award of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Culture Prize - proof of how highly she is valued in the cultural scene. Their incredible dedication to jazz has shaped the festival from the beginning and has made a lasting contribution to increasing jazz culture in the region. As you can see, she has a good knack for keeping jazz alive in Schwerin.
