Schwerin in debt chaos: 330 million euro deficit by 2033!

Schwerin is sliding ever deeper into a budget crisis. City leader Rico Badenschier (SPD) warns of an impending mountain of debt and deep financial difficulties. An annual deficit of 330 million euros is predicted by 2033, which is accompanied by an acute additional requirement of 18 million euros for 2025 Northern Courier reported.

The decisive factors for the rising costs are, above all, the additional financial burdens in the areas of youth, child day care and the human resources sector, which together amount to around 18 million euros. The youth specialist service is hit particularly hard, with additional costs of 11 million euros, followed by daycare care with 4 million euros and the human resources department with 3 million euros.
Thanks to increased tariff costs, the situation for the city became even more precarious.

Investments put on the back burner

Despite previous measures such as budget freezes and the freezing of investments in road construction, maintenance of green spaces and municipal buildings, the city administration appears to be facing an insurmountable challenge. Mayor Badenschier reported that even doubling taxes and cutting voluntary benefits will not be enough to plug the hole in the coffers.

The considerations range from higher trade tax revenues to a city toll. But all of these measures do not seem to have the desired effect in remedying the structural underfinancing. A new supplementary resolution for 2026 aims to avoid a new budget preparation, but forecasts suggest that the cash credit could rise to over 300 million euros by 2033. The original goal of being debt-free by 2029 is now considered unattainable.

Positive developments in the economy

In addition to the economy, Schwerin's residents are also attracted by a gastronomic highlight: the Samay Café on Franzenweg was voted the best ice cream in the city by readers. Here, guests have the opportunity to create their own flavor of ice cream, which makes the offer particularly attractive. Compared to other leisure options in the city, the OZ also tested three indoor playgrounds, all of which were rated as not particularly suitable for families.
Baltic Sea newspaper highlights that around 75% of people with dementia in Schwerin are cared for at home by relatives, which is why the Dementia Center offers valuable support.

The future remains paved with many financial uncertainties for Schwerin. It remains to be seen which measures will actually have the desired effect and whether the city will be able to change course in time.
