A significant change has taken place in Schwerin: the well-known telecommunications tower, which shaped the cityscape for over 60 years, was recently shortened by almost 9.7 meters. Work to dismantle the spire took place around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. DFMG Deutsche Funkturm GmbH used a helicopter to carry out the measures, which ensured everything went smoothly. Before it was shortened, the tower was 125.68 meters high and now had a new height of 116 meters. This measure was necessary because the technology in the upper area of the tower was considered outdated and was no longer needed. It was a quick deal for those responsible. Due to the good weather conditions, the dismantling was even started at dawn ahead of the originally planned time frame. The dismantling itself went smoothly. The spire, a GRP cylinder, was separated into four parts. As a result, the television tower has not only lost its height, but also its title as the tallest building in the city. This now goes to Schwerin Cathedral, which at 117.5 meters is 1.5 meters higher, but does not have the same technical significance. [NDR].
The history of the television tower
The telecommunications tower in Schwerin was built in the early 1960s and went into operation on July 1, 1964. He thus played a crucial role in the development of telecommunications technology in the region. While television towers in Germany are often equipped with audience areas, the Schwerin telecommunications tower was deprived of this equipment. After the viewing platform and restaurant are closed, the tower is no longer accessible to the public.
At a time when the television tower no longer occupies the highest position, it remains an important location for directional and mobile communications services. If the significance of the towers in today's media landscape is to be refreshed, the Schwerin telecommunications tower will certainly also play a role. Nevertheless, the city now looks to other heights, symbolized by the renovated cathedral. In the context of the tallest towers in Germany, such as the Berlin television tower at 368 meters, the Schwerin tower has slipped into a different category due to its new height.
