Schwerin primary school Nordlichter joins network against racism!

The Nordlichter primary school in Schwerin has now taken a significant step towards cosmopolitanism and tolerance. She has now been included in the “School without Racism – School with Courage” network. This was ceremoniously announced on July 18, 2025, when Reem Alabali-Radovan, member of the Bundestag and Federal Development Minister (SPD), presented the official certificate and shield. This makes the Nordlichter primary school part of a fascinating network that includes almost 5,000 schools throughout Germany.

A total of 67 schools in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are part of this network. The aim of the project is to take an active stand against racism, discrimination, bullying and violence. The students at Nordlichter Elementary School already have plans for various projects and events in order to get actively involved in their environment. Other schools in the region that are also part of the network can be found, for example, in Schwerin, Grabow, Grevesmühlen, Wismar and on the island of Poel. This community shows that the commitment to a non-discriminatory school culture is very important here.

A strong network for change

The program “School without Racism – School with Courage” was launched on November 30, 1994 and aims to actively shape the school climate through the school community. In this way, students, teachers and technical staff work together to promote respectful cooperation. The title is not an award, but rather a commitment. This means that at least 70% of the entire school community must commit to actively fighting discrimination, resolving conflicts and carrying out projects.

Since spring 2014, the federal coordination of the program has been setting up regional coordination in the federal states to support schools in their important work. It is particularly notable in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that the regional coordination is very active here. This commitment is also supported by the Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as part of the “Living Democracy!” program. promoted.

A look into the future

The Nordlichter primary school in Schwerin not only sets an example to the outside world, but also sends a strong signal to the school community. The projects that the students are planning will certainly have a positive impact on the school environment and strengthen cohesion and acceptance. By pulling together, a lot can be achieved in schools. With this in mind, all we can say is: There's something going on!
