Schwerin students fight for their dream trip to the Olympic final!

An exciting decision took place today, June 18, 2025, at the SSC Schwerin hockey facility. The school teams for the national finals of “Youth Training for the Olympics” in Berlin were determined here. Among the girls born between 2010 and 2013, the team from the Fridericianum high school was able to prevail in the thrill of the penalty shootout. They fought a thrilling duel against Schlossgymnasium Torgelow, which ended in a two-legged tie.

In the first leg, the Fridericianum players won 2-1, but were defeated 1-2 in the second leg. The decision was made in a captivating penalty shootout, which the Fridericianum girls won 6:4. The important players deserve special mention: Clara von Gadow, Anna Altmayer and Frieda Ritter played a key role in the success, while goalkeeper Milla Dangers, usually active in handball, did a great job in goal.

Great expectations for Berlin

Captain Clara von Gadow remembered the unforgettable experience during her last visit to Berlin, where her team finished 15th. “Being there is everything,” is the motto that both teams are adopting for the upcoming national final. The boys from the Niels Stensen School will also be represented in Berlin. They prevailed against the Fridericianum by winning the first leg 2-0 and the second leg 3-1. It's notable that four of the eight players on this team have no experience of club training, which makes the achievement all the more impressive.

Captain Tico Hollmeier and sports teacher Christopher Israel were very happy about the success. “It’s fantastic what the boys have done,” said Israel. The competition in Berlin promises to be an exciting event where students not only compete against each other, but also have the opportunity to gain sporting experience.

The “Youth Training for the Olympics” competition

“Youth trains for the Olympics” is the largest and most attractive school sports competition in Germany, in which around 800,000 students take part every year. This year, over 46,000 young people with around 4,600 teams are taking part in Brandenburg alone. The competition takes place in 19 Olympic sports such as handball, football and hockey and was founded in 1969 to promote sporting talent in schools.

There is also a competition for students with disabilities, where inclusion is very important. Teams from special schools and integrative schools compete. This shows how important sporting competitions are in our society to recognize and promote talent, regardless of physical requirements.

With these exciting developments, we can only hope that both the girls at the Fridericianum and the boys at the Niels Stensen School in Berlin do their best while keeping their fingers crossed for their supporters at home!
