Schwesig honors 37 volunteer heroes: Respect for volunteers!
Today, December 6, 2025, the importance of volunteering was celebrated in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig awarded the state's badge of honor to a total of 37 committed citizens as part of Volunteer Day. This award recognizes the exceptional work of volunteers from various areas, including the volunteer fire department, local heritage and nature conservation. In a moving speech, Schwesig emphasized the indispensability of these services for society. “Without the tireless volunteers, our country would not be the same,” said the Prime Minister.
The value of volunteer work is sometimes compromised by a lack of respect. In her words, Schwesig pointed out that many volunteers are often treated with hostility and insults. This is unacceptable and must finally be heard. “Volunteers must be recognized and respected for their efforts,” she said emphatically.
Support for volunteers
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has been supporting voluntary work for over a decade and has the Volunteer Foundation MV brought into being. This foundation offers a wide range of help, from financial support to legal assistance and further training. Interested parties can easily submit funding applications and receive legal advice via the EAS MV portal.
Some of the programs on offer are particularly worth mentioning: The qualification program “Club Leadership in MV” helps volunteers to strengthen their leadership skills, while the “Organizational Development in Clubs” program focuses on securing the future of clubs. In addition, the “Doing Good in MV” funding program creates financial scope for many interesting projects.
Variety of engagement opportunities
The Volunteer Foundation acts as a central contact point for all questions about volunteering. The offer ranges from information about funding to tax aspects. There are also contact persons in the individual districts and cities who provide helpful databases and support you in finding suitable volunteer opportunities.
Another highlight is Aktion Mensch's volunteer database, which enables a targeted search for volunteer work. Volunteering fairs also take place every year in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, whose motto “Get involved – make a difference” aptly captures the spirit of volunteering. Here, interested parties can find out about a variety of opportunities for involvement.
The recognition of the 37 volunteers by Prime Minister Schwesig is not only a nice gesture, but also a clear call to everyone to get involved in volunteer work and to promote cooperation in the community. Given the tireless work of the volunteers, everyone is invited to make a contribution, be it through active involvement or simply by treating each other with respect.
