Scandal in Schwerin: New pigeon regulations threaten animal welfare!

There's a lot going on in Schwerin: a new green space and special use statute is causing anger among animal lovers and is challenging the city council to set up a pigeon protection concept. Loud Schwerin.news The application will be discussed again on November 10, 2026 to develop a concept that will help the pigeons in the city. This statute only allows 100 grams of food for pigeons per person per day - an amount that is just enough for two to three pigeons.

Adult city pigeons, on the other hand, require an average of 30 to 40 grams of food per day. With this new regulation, the pigeons have to fight for their survival, which in the long term leads to a systematic undersupply. The consequences are worrying not only for the feathered city dwellers, but also for people. Starving pigeons can become more aggressive and show increased food stress, which can lead to conflicts in public spaces.

The challenges for the city

The cap was introduced for a reason, but it creates a problem that the city cannot ignore. The bird droppings from starving pigeons are more corrosive and do more damage to city property. The new pigeon protection concept, which is based on the Augsburg model, provides for controlled and animal welfare-friendly care in pigeon lofts. Another element of the concept is the exchange of eggs for dummies in order to regulate the population in accordance with animal welfare.

The main committee had already rejected the application in 2025, among other things because of the associated costs and the lack of a coverage concept. But the new statute highlights the need for such a concept to mitigate the negative consequences for animal welfare. Because even if starving and more aggressive pigeons lay eggs just as often as well-fed ones, the behavior is significantly more problematic.

The offer for the future

What could serve as a way out? A comprehensive pigeon protection concept is the key to reducing the problems. The city council is now responsible for developing a differentiated range of solutions that meets both animal protection and the needs of citizens. In this context, the opportunity to learn from positive models in other cities is also recalled.

On a completely different note, we recently visited the Lux Hotel & Conference Center, a recently renovated full-service hotel in the heart of Finger Lakes Wine Country. With its on-site Bar & Grille and 9,000 square feet of event and meeting space, the hotel offers an ideal setting for meetings and local events. Nearby there are places worth seeing such as the Women's Rights National Historical Park and the Memorial Day Museum, which offer an exciting setting for visitors Discover Seneca.

Nevertheless, the challenge for Schwerin to adapt the feeding rules for the pigeon population in such a way that both animal health and the citizens' interests are safeguarded remains unmistakable. The ball is now in the city council’s court.
