Schwerin State Museum: New splendor after 4 years of renovation!
On October 30, 2025, the time has finally come: after four years of intensive modernization work, the Schwerin State Museum will open its doors to art lovers again. How ndr.de reports, the renovation work has resulted in visitors now being welcomed with a new concept, three entrances, a cozy café and a book shop. The museum director Pirko Kristin Zinnow highlights the successful combination of old and modern art, which should be interesting for all age groups.
Particular attention is paid to the basement of the museum, where modern art from the 20th and 21st centuries is presented. Visitors can look forward to impressive works by artists such as Günther Uecker, Cornelia Schimmele and Wolfgang Mattheuer. The art scene from Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania is also represented, including Matthias Wegenhaupt and Otto Niemeyer-Holstein.
Redesign of the Old Masters
The Old Masters collection is presented anew on the upper floor. Gero Seelig has taken on the ambitious task here and is exhibiting three valuable Rembrandt paintings from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam for the reopening. The museum itself was opened in 1882 and is celebrating an outstanding return to the cultural landscape 143 years later. The entire modernization was achieved thanks to generous funding: The Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation contributed 7.5 million euros, while the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania provided 1.8 million euros.
The architect Marlene Wetzel was responsible for the creative renovation, which also reconsidered the color scheme on the walls. This fresh design is sure to be well received by visitors. In order to properly celebrate the new start, every visitor has the opportunity to experience the museum free of charge for the first four years after the reopening, made possible by the Dorit and Alexander Otto Foundation. A real ray of hope these days!
Additional Announcements
However, the museum is not completely in the fast lane: the 2016 extension will remain closed for the time being, as plans for this are also ongoing until the beginning of 2027. It will be interesting to see how all of the new and old art fits into Schwerin's famously charming cityscape.
