Schwerin State Museum: reopening with a festive program on Thursday!
October 30, 2025 will be a holiday for all art lovers in Schwerin, as the eagerly awaited reopening of the State Museum will take place on this day. After a comprehensive modernization that took about two years longer than planned, the public can look forward to a fresh, new concept. As kultur-mv.de reports, the museum will retain its historical charisma, but at the same time also have modern elements.
The reopening is the result of extensive replanning that was necessary in order not to endanger Schwerin's UNESCO World Heritage status. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig explained that a newly planned staircase, which not only had functional value but was also seen as a bridge to the city's sustainable development, created this risky situation for World Heritage status. Despite these delays, the team led by director Dr. Pirko Zinnow is confident that the wait will be worth it.
Festive program for the reopening
A varied program was put together for the festive occasion. From 3 p.m., guests can expect art on two floors that is designed to be both digital and inclusive. An opening ceremony, led by prominent personalities such as Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig and Minister of Education Bettina Martin, will introduce the official part.
The Mecklenburg State Theater will provide atmosphere with painting and drama from 3:45 p.m., while the Ensemble Reflector will provide music from baroque to modern from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Humorous moments are also taken care of: Chaos Variete will present interactive comedy from 3:30 p.m. All of this happens in the midst of street food stands that offer a varied culinary offering and open their doors from 3 p.m. A highlight will be the light and shape projection at 6 p.m., which will bathe not only the guests but also the surroundings of the museum in a fascinating light.
Entrance and opening times
The Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania not only financed the modernization, but also made free entry possible for two years after the reopening. This will contribute to strengthening the cultural participation of the population. The regular opening hours of the Schwerin State Museum will be Tuesday to Sunday from April to October from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from November to March from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further information, the museum's website museum-Schwerin.de can be visited.
A small foretaste of what may still await the city: Schwerin is emerging as a contender for UNESCO World Heritage status. Each proposed heritage must meet at least one of six criteria, ranging from unique cultural traditions to significant historical landscapes, according to welterbetour.de. The city has prepared accordingly, and the museum's renovation measures are an important step in this direction.
The anticipation among the people of Schwerin and beyond is palpable, and the reopening of the State Museum will certainly open another chapter in the city's colorful cultural history.
