Open Day: Lively insights into the castle festival!
On Sunday, June 14, 2025, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state parliament opened its doors for an exciting open day. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., those responsible asked citizens to take a look behind the scenes of state politics. Last entry was at 4:30 p.m. and the location for this special event was the picturesque Burggarten, where the “Diversity Mile” was set up. NDR reports that the traditional event took place in the middle of the Schwerin Castle Festival and was accompanied by numerous factions, clubs and associations.
The President of the State Parliament, Birgit Hesse, welcomed the guests and offered numerous opportunities to talk to members of the five parliamentary groups. In addition to interesting information about the factions and committees, visitors were also able to visit various areas of the castle that are normally inaccessible. These included, among other things, the plenary hall, new conference rooms in the Burgsee wing and the office of the President of the State Parliament. Politics MV emphasizes that the event not only brought parliamentary work closer, but also offered exciting tours and discussions with MPs.
Attractions around the castle
The tea pavilion with a view of Lake Schwerin as well as the wine leaf hall and the castle museum, which could be visited free of charge, ensured physical well-being. There were also a variety of activities, such as performances by local talent in the castle courtyard - including a shanty choir and several bands. State Parliament MV reported that discussions about the Ombudsman and state data protection also took place, which gave the guests a comprehensive insight into the work of the various institutions.
A technical highlight was the opening of the historic swing bridge between the castle island and the castle garden, which was available to visitors from 1:00 p.m. to 1:20 p.m. The bridge was opened to pedestrians for the first time in years, which not only created excitement but also some great photo opportunities.
A celebration for the whole family
As in previous years, guests were given the opportunity to get an impression of the diversity of socio-political work. Around 140 costumed participants consolidated the colorful hustle and bustle around the castle, while in the background the “Son et Lumière” light show guaranteed maximum fun for visitors.
The event not only offered an informative program, but also the opportunity to spend carefree hours in the heart of Schwerin. The keen interest of the more than 15,000 guests in 2022 is another sign that the people of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are very interested in their state politics and certainly appreciate the openness of the state parliament.
