Theater tent in Schwerin: Barrier-free and full of excitement!

A lot has happened in the heart of Schwerin in the last few weeks - the long-awaited theater tent in the kitchen garden is finally ready and is causing excitement and anticipation. Construction began on March 17, 2025 and is currently in full swing. With a total area of 2,200 m², the tent will not only serve as a stage for various performances, but will also enable gastronomic offerings in the foyer tent. After technical setup by the beginning of June, rehearsals for the operetta production “The Merry Widow” will begin after Pentecost, with the premiere on June 27, 2025. Eleven performances of the classic are planned until August 3, 2025.

The theater tent not only brings top-class performances to Schwerin, but also pays particular attention to accessibility. The entire infrastructure, including the checkout, cloakroom and sanitary areas, has few steps and is wheelchair accessible. This means that all theater lovers can enjoy art and culture - this is also thanks to the commitment of the organizers, who respond to the needs of all guests. There are enough free parking spaces around the tent at the Alter Garten, and there is also a connection to public transport - the bus stop at the Schleifmühle is just a few steps away.

A consideration for the neighborhood

Those responsible for the project have also changed the arrangement of the tent in consultation with the residents. This consideration is reinforced by targeted measures: the outdoor lighting is designed so that it does not shine into residents' children's rooms, and the performances end at 10 p.m. at the latest. This ensures a harmonious coexistence between culture and neighborhood. The arrival and departure times are also optimally coordinated with the performance dates, which is particularly advantageous for residents.

To ensure that the events run smoothly, there is a monthly rent of 26,000 euros for the theater tent. This is expected to last a total of 14 months, during which various other productions, including ballet and concerts by the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle, will also be on the program. This flexibility is particularly important as the theater tent will serve as an alternative venue during construction work at the State Theater from September 2025 to August 2026.

Optimal construction for all visitors

The commitment to accessibility not only runs through the structural measures of the tent, but is also taken into account in the entire event planning. The Federal Office for Accessibility attaches great importance to the findability of the event location and the design of the rooms so that people with disabilities can also move independently. Information about the venue's accessibility is clearly communicated, and the area offers many amenities such as bike racks and well-marked parking areas.

Schwerin has thus taken an important step towards an inclusive culture, and the theater tent will be a welcoming place for all theater lovers in the city. The location in the kitchen garden, just a 10-minute walk from the Big House, will quickly establish itself as a new cultural meeting place. The anticipation of the first performances is growing not only in the hearts of theater lovers, but also among everyone who wants to spend a relaxing evening in pleasant company.
